APPENDIX: LAST MEALS
It was generally the custom for the condemned men to be given whatever they wanted as their last meal – a nearby restaurant usually provided the fare. Rumor has it that they had a “hangman’s special” there at one point, but I’ve never confirmed it. The exact menus were not often reported, but a few of them were:

Buff Higgins: March 23, 1894:
spring chicken, raw oysters, fried eggs, fried potatoes, biscuits, coffee, and apple pie.

Patrick Prendergast (assassin of Mayor Harrison): July 13, 1894
Porterhouse steak, French fried potatoes, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, hot biscuits and a pot of hot chocolate

Isaac Jacobsen: Sept 19, 1884
ham and eggs, spring chicken, strong coffee

Haymarket Anarchists: Nov 11, 1887
steak, eggs, toast, fried oysters.

George Painter (wife murderer whose rope broke; he had to be hanged twice):
half a spring chicken, a dozen raw oysters, bread, butter, coffee, and a dollar’s worth of cigars.

William Powers, 1897:
Frogs’ legs, ham and eggs, mushroom, french fried potatoes, celery, coffee, a cigar.

John Lattimore, 1897:
fried fish, oatmeal, custard, strawberry shortcake, ice cream, coffee.
